Present Syllabus of Home Science at Intermediate Level

The home science by Criterion Referenced Tests syllabus is a part of the curriculum and plays an important role. in the development of the balanced personality. Aside from the acquisition of information, which is the dominating aim, the teaching of home science shoulc1also provide for the development of attitudes, interests and skills in order to affect the maximum growth on the part of the learner. The first requisite for this is the scientifically constructed syllabus. In order to justify the aims and objectives of teaching home science it is essential to know what to teach. It is, therefore, very essential to form a suitable home science by Criterion Referenced Tests syllabus.

The Secondary Education Commission (1952) gave importance to home science as an independent group of subjects to be taught during the last 3-4 years of secondary education. Thus, in the present revised scheme, it is possible for a girl to take home science completely as an individual subject. The Government of India as well as the different state government have encouraged the starting of home science section in several higher secondary or multipurpose schools.

The present syllabus in home science for the intermediate classes is a combination of different branches of home science such as physiology and hygiene health and sanitation, child welfare and sociology.

Human Physiology: The important sections of the human physiology include instruction in different systems of body. The students learn:

  1. the cellular structure of the living tissue .
  2. The skeletal system
  3. Muscular system
  4. The digestive system
  5. Nutritive elements in food
  6. Food requirement of the body under various conditions
  7. Nutritional value of milk in diet
  8. Balanced diet
  9. Effect of alcohol and condiments on health
  10. The excretory system
  11. The blood circulatory system
  12. The respiratory system
  13. Influence of exercise on physical development and efficiency
  14. The nervous system
  15. The sensory organs
  16. The reproductive system
  17. The endocrine glands

Hygiene: Maintenance of good health for happiness, control of diseases. Care of ‘the sick, personal grooming are the important chapters included. Students also learn:

  10. Air borne diseases
  11. Diseases spread by insects and animals
  12. Contagious diseases
  13. Slums and their dangers
  14. Gardens play grounds and open spaces

Child Welfare: Child welfare section includes the following chapters:

  1. Care of the expectant mother
  2. Preparation regarding confinement
  3. Care of the newly born child
  4. Care of the infant
  5. Problems of infant mortality
  6. Modem organization or movements for child ‘Welfare
  7. Dowry system

Sociology: In this section topics as meaning of sociology, family and relationship, importance of sex education, marriage, and management are important. Students learn about:

  1. Scope and methods of sociology
  2. Human wants and frustration
  3. Family as a means for satisfying human wants
  4. Indian family and the role played by each member
  5. The psychology of relationship within and single families
  6. Influence of childhood on personality
  7. Sex education in childhood h. Boys- Girls relationships
  8. Early marriage
  9. Legal and biological qualifications for marriage
  10. Adjustment in marriage
  11. House management, budgeting and economy
  12. Family planning

The home science syllabus is purely academic in nature. Different topics are handled under the caption of home science. The teacher and students usually stick to one textbook. Therefore, the syllabus is bookish; the theory portion of home science syllabus is over emphasized. Though very few periods are generally allotted for practical work to be done in the school. The syllabus is mainly examination – oriented as a result of which the teachers as well as the pupils select important portions from the whole syllabus from the examination point of view.
