Home science has been recognized as an important part of the general education of girls at the intermediate level. Home science deals with the art of proper home-making which has within its ambit knowledge of basic sciences, arts, applied sciences like nutrition, health and hygiene, child care, home economics and management. The idea is to help develop in the student a social philosophy of personal and community living. The Secondary Education Commission (1952) have rightly pointed out that the present day education does not confirm to the objectives of general education, especially in the case of girls, and the education should be more closely connected with the home and community. Therefore, they have urged that the teaching online of home-science in girls schools is essential and home making should become an integral part of educational background for girls.

     One of the main recommendations of the Secondary Education Commission ( 1952) appointed by the Government of India was that proper facilities for teaching home-science must be provided in girls schools. Almost all the states at present have extended facilities to the girl students for this purposes. Home science has been included in the school and college curriculum in India. In the school stage it deals with various ideas of domestic works, hygiene and physiology and craft natural science and general science. Even in the preprimary stage children learn home science through activities such as keeping themselves clean, washing hands and utensils, cleaning, serving and eating food and care of one’s belongings. In the elementary schools regular courses have been outlined for teaching online lessons on nutrition, cleaning and decorations of the home.

    The Kothari Commission (1964-66) said “Education should be developed so as to increase productivity, achieve social and national integration, accelerate the process of modernization and cultivate social moral and spiritual values. Integration of the different facts of pupil’s life is the very essence of home science by Criterion Referenced Tests which is education for home living. The Kothari Commission pointed out, ” of all the different factors which influence the quality of education, its contribution to national development, the quality, competence and character of teachers are undoubtedly the most significant . R.P.Devdas, the Ex-Chief Home Economist, Government of India, in her book Recent Trends in Education has pointed out”. The existing home science curriculum for higher secondary schools should be evaluated and revised from time to time in the light of previous experience and developing need and trends”. (Das, R.1983).

Importance of Home Science at Intermediate Level

    Home science education is an attempt to meet the demands of modem society. Home science is the application of many science and arts towards achieving better healthier and happier homes. It includes knowledge of basic science, arts, applied sciences such as nutrition, food, clothing, childcare, home nursing, home management and human relationship.

    The study of home science opens avenues for a number of professionals. It forms the basis for so many studies which are purely vocational in nature. It has solved the problems of leisure. The study of the subject at intermediate level forms the basis of many useful hobbies and other productive activities in the later life of the students. Modem technology and growing individualism are likely to cause changes in home life and therefore home science has become necessary as a preparation for home making the utilization of modern facilities made available by electricity, machinery, etc. has to be taught for better living.

     Home science is important to teach how to acquire the ability to give each of the environmental factors, its right place and proper emphasis. Many important changes have taken place in the pattern of family life. Some of these changes are small families, weakening of the joint family system, and increased independence of women. The domestic problem created by all there can be solved by studying home science. Activities in home science such as family health, nutrition, childcare, home improvement, clothing and textile are directed. Knowledge of these factors focused towards the attainment of family happiness. Home science is the establishment of the art of human relationship. Home science helps in the development of right values and appreciations and makes a contribution towards increasing health and happiness. It enables pupils to understand the functions of parenthood, responsibilities of family membership and management of one’s resources .

     Home science because of its intimate relationship and concern for individual and community life has a tremendous scope for general education. Home science claimed to be one of the important subjects for girls in the higher secondary schools. It is more important in building ideal homes in the new setting and other aspects from the stand point of human values and happiness. The home science pupils utilize the experiences for carrying out their responsibilities and thereby learn home science effectively. Home science can prove to be realistic and practical education since learning by doing leaves a permanent impression in the mind of pupils. The home science by Criterion Referenced Tests syllabus gives pupils adequate knowledge regarding cleaning and storing food, planning menu, balanced diet, nutrients, storage of drinking water, exercise, sound health habits and about infectious diseases. Thus, home science has become an important subject of study in school curriculum.

Objectives of Home Science at Intermediate Level

     Home science as a subject that emphasizes upon originality. It offers ample scope to exercise intellect. It provides the ability to make a decision on the basis of clear thinking and judgment. The pupil can think through their problems, make decisions after seeing all sides of it, can become  self reliant and can be able to work independently by exercising their intellect in the proper manner.

     Home science as a subject offers the maximum opportunity to express one’s ability to take up things and improve the quality of leadership. Activities of home science arouse pupils’ interest in better diets and also to learn about the utility and value of food and they have opportunity to express creatively their talents and appreciate the aesthetic and psychological factors involved in eating for satisfaction and nourishment. Society is a compact human organization. Home science is the only subject of study which seeks to develop qualities as mutual adjustment, clear understanding and a responsible attitude necessary for the effective functioning of an organized society. The pupil learns the ability and willingness to share responsibility in the class, home and community. The study of home science includes the area of human relationship, which is important in fulfilling the social aim. Pupils are taught individual and group recreation, leisure time activities and social responsibilities.

     Home science advances vast scope to train the young minds at home. It renders valuable service to the nation by enabling its women to establish sound homes. Inspiring in the homemakers a desire to serve the nation and to promote international good will and understanding is the most important contribution that home science has made. Through observation on child development and mother craft, the inherent interest of adolescent pupils in children receive fulfillment. This area of home science develops eagerness in pupils to take care of and to love children. Pupils are taught to understand the stages of child growth and development. Thus the needs of the nation and the dreams of the future are realized and fulfilled by the study of home science. The major purposes of instructions in home science:

  1. To develop in the pupils the sense of appreciation and of awareness for the art of daily living.
  2. To develop opportunities for creative expressions.
  3. To create the recognition of relationship of home science to other school activities and its place in the total school programmed.
  4. To develop good work habits.
  5. To develop individual initiative and to encourage self reliance.
  6. To acquaint pupils with the latest trends in many field of practical life.
  7.  To enable the pupils to create an environment and out look to richer and purposeful lives.
  8. To develop in the pupils the ideas of coordinating the modern scientific knowledge.
